The best books about Google Shopping

Improving the results of your Google Shopping efforts is a constant struggle. Luckily there are many resources to be found. In this short blog, we discuss some of the best books that every Google Shopping user should own. For some it will be mandatory reading, for others, they will serve as useful reference books about the details of the Merchant Center or bidding strategies. 

1 – The Business Owner’s Guide to Google Shopping: How to Do More with Less with Google Shopping

This book, written by seasoned Google Shopping veteran Mark Hammersley, is aimed at providing knowledge and insights relevant to all the different type of users. Even for those using an ad agency to manage their campaigns, this book has valuable tips and tricks for getting the most out of your investment. It really delves into all aspects of the Merchant Center interface, bidding strategies and improving product data.

2 – Make Each Click Count Using Google Shopping: Revealing Profits & Strategies

Online marketing guru Andy Splichal takes a more strategic look at Google Shopping campaigns and guides you to the right choices to get the most out of the pay-per-click platform. This book is more targeted towards advanced Google Shopping users that manage their own campaigns. 

3 – Mastering Google AdWords: Step-by-Step Instructions for Advertising Your Business

There are relatively few books specifically dedicated to Google Shopping or the Merchant Center. This book by online entrepreneur Noah Gray is about Google Ads in general, but also dives into Google Shopping. Why it is on this list is because it is a very good, step-by-step, guide to the Google Ads universe. A must own for anyone spending money on ads served by Google.

4 – Google Shopping Secrets: The secret math behind Google shopping feeds (FREE!) 

Brian Roizen is co-founder of Feedonomics, a product feed management tool, and is very knowledgeable about product feeds and Google Shopping. In this free (!), ebook, Roizen exposes some valuable tricks that you could use to great effect in your campaigns.


Although there are a lot good online resources on specific elements of Google Shopping or the Merchant Center, it is always useful to have a good reference book lying within your grasp at all times (on paper or on an ereader). All of the above mentioned books are valuable and will repay themselves many times over with the improvements you could make from their insights.

Why didn’t this site exist before?

A project such as building is usually born out of the frustration: Why doesn’t something like this already exist? For me, this little labour of love began with similar bewilderment. Google Shopping is quickly becoming one of Google’s most important cash cows, so why is the tooling around it so dire. Especially when it comes to the Google Product Taxonomy. I was flabbergasted and determined to change this. Finding the right category for a product shouldn’t be such a chore.

At the moment I’m writing this blog the website is still in it’s infancy. It’s a newborn, far removed from learning to walk, even crouching isn’t an option. It will get there. Hopefully fast, depending on the spare time I have for it. The features are basic to say the least, but I hope it is a step up from searching through the plain text list of Google Product Categories that the big G provides you with. I’ve got many ideas to improve this site and am already testing out some of them behind the scenes, but I really hope you’ll pitch in and send me feature request and tips. Furthermore, bug reports are much appreciated.

On top of improving the Google Product Category Finder, I hope to help Google Shopping users with other tools and tips via this website and Google Shopping Blog in the coming months.
